Description

A bold and juicy twist on two comfort food classics, these Smash Burger Sloppy Joes feature crispy browned ground beef simmered in a tangy burger style sauce and topped with melted cheddar on buttery toasted buns.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 4 soft burger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup diced onions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Place a large skillet over medium high heat.
  2. In a small bowl, mix ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Set aside.
  3. Add ground beef to the hot skillet. Smash it down and cook undisturbed for 2 to 3 minutes to develop browning.
  4. Break the beef apart and continue cooking until fully browned.
  5. Stir in diced onions and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until softened.
  6. Pour the prepared sauce mixture over the beef and stir well to coat evenly.
  7. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. In a separate pan, melt butter and toast burger buns until golden.
  9. Spoon the hot beef mixture onto the bottom buns and top each with a slice of cheddar cheese so it melts from the heat.
  10. Place the top buns on and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Cook the beef in a hot skillet to develop flavorful crispy edges.
  • Toast the buns with butter to prevent sogginess.
  • Leftover filling can be refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
