Description

Flaky golden puff pastry filled with tender beef, rich gravy, and melted cheddar cheese, baked until crisp and perfectly savory. A comforting bakery-style roll made easily at home.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 400 grams diced raw beef steak
  • 150 grams grated cheddar cheese
  • 2 ready made puff pastry sheets
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon plain flour
  • 120 milliliters beef broth
  • 1 whole egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and cook the chopped onion until soft.
  3. Add the diced beef, salt, and black pepper. Cook until browned.
  4. Stir in the flour and cook for one minute.
  5. Pour in the beef broth and simmer until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
  6. Stir in the grated cheddar cheese until combined.
  7. Lightly flour a work surface and lay out the puff pastry sheets.
  8. Spoon the cooled beef and cheese mixture along the center of each pastry sheet.
  9. Fold the pastry over to enclose the filling and press the edges firmly with a fork to seal.
  10. Place the rolls seam side down on the prepared baking tray.
  11. Brush the tops evenly with the beaten egg.
  12. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  13. Allow to rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Let the filling cool slightly before sealing to prevent soggy pastry.
  • Do not overfill the pastry to avoid leaks.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of dried thyme to the filling.
  • Reheat leftovers in the oven to maintain crisp texture.
