- 4 thick bread slices
- 1 cup cooked sliced chicken
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- a pinch of nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F.
- Melt butter in a saucepan, add flour, and stir.
- Gradually whisk in milk, then add salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Cook until thick.
- Lightly toast bread and place in baking dish.
- Layer chicken and cheese between bread slices.
- Spoon sauce over top and sprinkle remaining cheese.
- Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden and bubbling.
- Let rest briefly, then serve.
