Description

Tender and flavorful Sweet and Spicy Oven Baked Ribs with a perfectly balanced spice rub and sticky homemade BBQ sauce, perfect for a weekend treat or family gathering.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 slabs pork ribs, baby back, spare, or St Louis cut
  • Spice Rub:
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1 1/2 tbsp kosher salt
    • 2 tsp smoked paprika
    • 2 tsp onion powder
    • 1 tsp garlic powder
    • 1 tsp cumin
    • 1/4 tsp to 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
    • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • BBQ Sauce:
    • 1 cup ketchup
    • 1/4 cup brown sugar
    • 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
    • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt
    • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
    • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
    • 1/2 tsp onion powder
    • 1/4 tsp to 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
    • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Remove the membrane from the back of the ribs for more tender results.
  3. Mix all spice rub ingredients in a small bowl. Rub generously over both sides of the ribs.
  4. Place ribs on a baking sheet lined with foil. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 2.5 to 3 hours, until tender.
  5. While ribs are baking, prepare BBQ sauce: combine all sauce ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Remove ribs from oven and increase oven temperature to 425°F (220°C).
  7. Brush ribs generously with BBQ sauce and bake uncovered for 10-15 minutes, until the sauce is caramelized and sticky.
  8. Let ribs rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For extra smoky flavor, add a few drops of liquid smoke to the BBQ sauce.
  • Ribs can be prepared a day ahead and reheated with sauce for convenience.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper according to your preferred spice level.
