Description

Southern Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy feature juicy, seasoned beef patties served with a rich and savory onion gravy. This comforting dish is perfect for a hearty family dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 lbs ground beef (85/15)
  • 1/4 cup chopped scallions, plus more for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning, plus more for gravy
  • 1 packet Sazon seasoning (about 1 1/2 teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 teaspoon dried minced onion
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or avocado oil)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 beefy onion soup packet
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, scallions, Cajun seasoning, Sazon seasoning, garlic paste, Worcestershire sauce, maple syrup, and dried minced onion. Mix gently to combine.
  2. Form mixture into 6–8 hamburger patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sear patties until browned on both sides, about 4–5 minutes per side. Remove patties and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add chopped yellow onion and sauté until softened and caramelized, about 5–7 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir to form a roux. Cook for 1–2 minutes.
  6. Add beef broth and onion soup packet. Stir and simmer until gravy thickens, about 3–5 minutes.
  7. Return patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat through.
  8. Garnish with additional chopped scallions and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use 85/15 ground beef for the best balance of flavor and juiciness.
  • Sazon seasoning can be omitted or replaced with your favorite spice blend.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or creamy grits for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
