- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 or 3 (1-pound) loaves round dense bread
- 1 stick butter, melted
- 4 ounces sharp white cheddar cheese, shredded
- 4 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper, carrot, and celery. Cook 5–7 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook 1 more minute.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Stir in tomato paste, diced tomatoes with juice, and beef broth. Mix well.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, dry mustard, chili powder, onion powder, and brown sugar. Simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes until thickened.
- Slice tops off bread loaves and hollow out centers, leaving a 1-inch border. Brush inside with melted butter and toast in oven for 5 minutes.
- Fill toasted bread bowls with sloppy joe mixture. Top with shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese.
- Return to oven for 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use dense, crusty bread to hold the filling without collapsing.
- Simmer filling until thick for best texture.
- Freshly shredded cheese melts better and tastes richer.
- Save removed bread pieces for dipping or croutons.
