Description
Samosa Chaatdish (aka Samosa Tater Tot Hotdish) is a flavorful fusion of Indian street food and comforting casserole. Spiced ground meat, veggies, and spinach are baked under crispy tater tots and topped with chaat favorites like chutneys, yogurt, and crunchy sev. A perfect gluten-free dish with bold, warming flavors.

- 4 medium yellow onions, minced finely
- Ghee or olive oil
- 2 tbsp jalapeรฑos, seeded and minced
- 6 medium garlic cloves, minced
- 4 tsp fresh ginger, minced
- 2 tbsp garam masala
- 2 tsp cumin
- 2 tsp coriander
- 4 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 2 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 tsp pepper, to taste
- Salt, to taste
- 6 Roma tomatoes, diced
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 package frozen spinach (16 oz)
- Juice of one lemon
- 1 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 cup frozen peas (optional)
- 1 package of tater tots
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (optional)
- 1 cup coriander chutney
- Bonus toppings: minced raw onions, sweet tamarind chutney, bhel sev, a sprinkle of chaat masala, chana masala
Instructions
- Chop and prep all ingredients before starting to cook.
- In a large pot, fry onions over medium heat until caramelized and golden, adding salt and ghee/oil as needed.
- Clear space in the pan, add more ghee or oil, then fry jalapeรฑo, garlic, and ginger until fragrant.
- Add garam masala, cumin, coriander, turmeric, and cinnamon. Stir well; it will be dry.
- Remove half the onion-spice mix. Brown half the ground meat with salt and pepper, then repeat with the other half. Combine both batches back together.
- Preheat oven to 350ยฐF.
- Add diced tomatoes and tomato paste, sprinkle with salt. Cover and simmer on low for 15โ20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in frozen spinach, lemon juice, and half the chopped cilantro. Turn off heat and adjust seasoning. Add peas if using.
- Transfer the mixture into a 13ร9 casserole dish. Top with a layer of tater tots.
- Bake for 40โ50 minutes until tater tots are golden and crispy.
- Serve hot with remaining cilantro, Greek yogurt, coriander chutney, and desired bonus chaat toppings.
Notes
- Use lamb for a more traditional flavor or beef for a milder taste.
- Customize toppings to suit your preferences or make a toppings bar for a party-style experience.
