Ingredients

Units Scale

Fritters

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of freshly ground nutmeg
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups peeled and chopped Honeycrisp apples
  • Vegetable or canola oil, for frying

Glaze

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk (plus more as needed)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Flaked sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Heat several inches of oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat until it reaches 350ยฐF. Line a plate with paper towels for draining.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla.
  4. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Fold in the chopped apples.
  5. Drop 1/4-cup portions of batter into the hot oil (1โ€“2 at a time) and fry for 3โ€“4 minutes, flipping once or twice, until golden brown.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the paper towels to drain. Repeat with the remaining batter.
  7. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Add more milk 1 tsp at a time if too thick.
  8. Once fritters are slightly cool, dip each one in glaze and place on parchment paper. Immediately sprinkle with flaked sea salt.
  9. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use firm, tart-sweet apples like Honeycrisp or Pink Lady for best texture.
  • Fritters are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in a toaster oven to revive crispiness.
  • Add a dash of maple extract to the glaze for an extra autumnal flavor.
