Description

This Nutella Cake is every Nutella loverโ€™s dream! Moist, decadent chocolate cake layers smothered with a rich chocolate Nutella buttercream frosting. Itโ€™s the ultimate indulgence for any occasion.

For the Cake:

  • 5 eggs
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup dutched cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp instant espresso powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

For the Frosting:

  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups Nutella
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake Batter:
    In a stand mixer, beat 5 eggs on high speed for about 4 minutes. Add 2 cups of sugar and continue beating on high for another 4 minutes. Add 1 tsp vanilla extract and 1 cup buttermilk, beating until incorporated.
  • Add Espresso and Butter:
    Dissolve 2 tbsp instant espresso powder in 1 cup of room temperature water, and add to the mixture. Then, add in the melted butter and mix well.
  • Add Dry Ingredients:
    Sift 2 1/2 cups of flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp baking powder, and 1 cup dutched cocoa powder. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the egg mixture using a whisk.
  • Bake the Cake Layers:
    Divide the batter evenly among 3 (9-inch) cake pans. Bake at 350ยฐF for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center of the cakes.
  • Prepare the Frosting:
    In a bowl, beat 16 oz softened cream cheese, 2 cups softened butter, 1/2 cup cocoa powder, 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, and 2 cups Nutella until smooth and creamy.
  • Cool the Cakes:
    Once the cakes are baked, flip them onto cooling racks and let them cool completely. If desired, use a serrated knife to slice the tops of the cakes to create flat surfaces.
  • Assemble the Cake:
    Frost the top of each cake layer with the Nutella frosting. After placing the final cake layer, cover the top and sides with the remaining frosting.
