Description

These Mexican Tortas are loaded with seasoned meat, creamy avocado, refried beans, and fresh toppings, all layered inside crispy bolillo or telera rolls. Ingredients

For the Torta Sandwich:

  • 4 bolillo rolls or telera rolls, split in half

  • 1 lb thinly sliced steak, chicken, or pork

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp chili powder

  • 1 can refried beans, warmed

  • 1 avocado, sliced

  • 1 cup shredded lettuce

  • 1 large tomato, sliced

  • 1/2 cup sliced pickled jalapeรฑos

  • 1/2 cup queso fresco or cotija cheese, crumbled

  • 1/2 cup Mexican crema or sour cream

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise

  • Lime wedges, for serving


Instructions

Prepare the Meat:

  1. In a large bowl, season the sliced steak, chicken, or pork with salt, pepper, garlic powder, cumin, and chili powder.

  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  3. Add the seasoned meat and cook until fully cooked and slightly charred (5-7 minutes). Remove from heat.

Prepare the Rolls:
4. Preheat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat.
5. Lightly toast the bolillo or telera rolls, cut side down, until golden brown and crispy.

Assemble the Tortas:
6. Spread warmed refried beans on the bottom half of each toasted roll.
7. Add a generous portion of the cooked meat.
8. Layer on sliced avocado, shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and pickled jalapeรฑos.
9. Sprinkle with crumbled queso fresco or cotija cheese.

Add Condiments:
10. In a small bowl, mix Mexican crema (or sour cream) with mayonnaise.
11. Spread this mixture on the top half of each roll.

Serve:
12. Place the top half of the roll over the fillings.
13. Serve with lime wedges on the side.

  • Use grilled chicken or carnitas for a different flavor.
