Description

Maritozzi are delightful Italian cream-filled buns that are soft, fluffy, and perfect for breakfast or as a sweet treat. Filled with luscious whipped cream and dusted with powdered sugar, they are a true indulgence.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Dough

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs

For the Filling

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

For Garnish

  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy. Then, add in eggs, melted butter, and flour, mixing until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  3. Shape the Buns: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each bun.
  4. Second Rise: Cover the shaped buns with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes until puffy.
  5. Bake the Buns: Preheat your oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Let them cool on a wire rack.
  6. Prepare the Filling: While the buns cool, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form. Ensure the cream is cold for the best texture.
  7. Fill the Buns: Once cooled, slice each bun in half and generously fill with the whipped cream. Dust with more powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure your milk is warm but not hot to properly activate the yeast.
  • Spoon and level your flour for accuracy to avoid dense buns.
  • Allow the buns to cool completely before filling to prevent the cream from melting.
  • Experiment with different extracts like vanilla or almond for a twist.
  • Keep any leftover whipped cream separate to prevent sogginess.
