Description

These crispy, low-carb mozzarella sticks are the perfect keto-friendly appetizer or snack, with a delicious cheesy center and a crunchy coating


Ingredients

  • 12 oz mozzarella cheese (preferably string cheese or block cheese, cut into sticks)
  • 1/2 cup almond flour
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup pork rinds, crushed (optional for extra crunch)
  • Olive oil or avocado oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the coating:
    • In a shallow bowl, combine almond flour, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
    • In another shallow bowl, place the beaten eggs.
    • In a third shallow bowl, place the crushed pork rinds (if using).
  2. Coat the mozzarella sticks:
    • Dip each mozzarella stick first into the almond flour mixture, then into the beaten eggs, and finally into the pork rind coating (if using). Press gently to ensure the coating sticks.
  3. Freeze the coated sticks:
    • Place the coated mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze for at least 30 minutes to prevent the cheese from melting too quickly during frying.
  4. Heat the oil:
    • In a large skillet, heat enough olive or avocado oil to cover the bottom of the pan over medium heat. The oil should be hot but not smoking.
  5. Fry the mozzarella sticks:
    • Carefully place the frozen mozzarella sticks into the hot oil, working in batches if necessary. Fry for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Use tongs to flip the sticks gently to avoid breaking them.
  6. Drain and serve:
    • Remove the mozzarella sticks from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
    • Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as marinara or ranch.

Notes

  • Air fryer method: You can also air fry these mozzarella sticks at 400ยฐF (200ยฐC) for 5-6 minutes, flipping halfway through, for a healthier, less oily option.
  • Add more flavor: Try adding chili flakes or Italian seasoning to the coating for extra flavor.
  • Make ahead: Freeze the coated mozzarella sticks in an airtight container for up to 1 month and fry them when ready.
