Description

These homemade croutons offer a crispy texture and golden, seasoned flavor that store-bought versions can’t match. Perfect for soups, salads, casseroles, or as a savory snack, they’re easy to make in the oven, stovetop, or air fryer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of bread (about 12 ounces), cut into 3/4 to 1-inch cubes (any type of bread works)
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter, or a combination
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (optional, or to taste)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (optional, or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons seasonings (such as Italian seasoning) or homemade seasonings (optional)

Instructions

  • Prep the Croutons: Dice the bread into ¾ to 1-inch cubes. Make sure the cubes are roughly the same size for even cooking.
  • Toss with Seasonings and Oil/Butter: In a large bowl, mix together olive oil or melted butter with seasonings. Toss the bread cubes in the mixture until completely coated.
  • Oven Baking Method:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper (optional).
    • Spread the bread cubes in a single layer on the sheet.
    • Bake for 15-20 minutes, tossing halfway through, until golden and crispy. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.
    • Remove from the oven and let them cool completely.
  • Stovetop Method: (Optional) Cook in a skillet by tossing the coated bread cubes over medium heat until crispy, stirring occasionally.
  • Air Fryer Method:
    • Preheat the air fryer to 400℉ (optional for softer croutons).
    • Add the bread cubes to the air fryer basket in a single layer and air fry for 2-3 minutes.
    • Shake the basket and continue cooking for 2-4 minutes, or until golden brown.
    • If making in batches, remember the air fryer may heat up, and cooking times may be shorter for subsequent batches.

Notes

  • Croutons can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1-2 weeks.
  • Experiment with different seasonings like thyme, rosemary, or paprika for added flavor.
  • If you prefer a softer crouton, skip preheating the air fryer.
