Description

Juicy ground beef hamburger steaks are pan-seared and simmered in a creamy, flavorful dill sauce. This quick and comforting 30-minute dinner is perfect served over mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1.3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium yellow onion โ€“ grated
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 small yellow onion โ€“ finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves โ€“ minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill โ€“ more for serving

Instructions

  1. Grate the onion into a large bowl. Add ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, cream, and egg. Mix by hand until just combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 portions, shape into balls, and flatten each to about ยพ inch thick. Set aside.
  3. Finely chop the second onion, mince the garlic, and chop the dill.
  4. Heat oil and butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook hamburger steaks for 4โ€“5 minutes per side until browned. Transfer to a plate.
  5. Reduce heat to low. Add garlic and chopped onion to the skillet and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  6. Stir in salt, pepper, and flour until incorporated. Add chicken broth and simmer for 2 minutes, scraping up any browned bits.
  7. Add heavy cream and dill. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1โ€“2 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  8. Return hamburger steaks to the skillet. Simmer for 5โ€“6 minutes, or until cooked through.
  9. Top with additional dill and freshly cracked black pepper. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Use freshly chopped dill for the best flavor.
  • Make sure not to overmix the beef to keep the patties tender.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice for a complete meal.
