Gnocchi alla Sorrentina is a classic Italian dish featuring tender potato gnocchi baked in a rich tomato sauce with melted mozzarella and a sprinkle of Parmesan. It’s comforting, cheesy, and full of fresh basil flavor.

- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic
- 14.5 ounces Italian tomatoes (or pureed)
- Pinch of salt, to taste
- Pinch of black pepper, to taste
- 16 ounces potato gnocchi
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, divided
- 8 ounces mozzarella ball, cut into small cubes (or 1 cup shredded)
- Chopped fresh basil, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Add the Italian tomatoes, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 10–12 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Cook gnocchi according to package instructions. Drain and add to the tomato sauce, stirring to coat evenly.
- Transfer the gnocchi and sauce mixture to a baking dish. Sprinkle half of the Parmesan cheese over the top.
- Evenly distribute mozzarella cubes over the gnocchi and sprinkle the remaining Parmesan cheese.
- Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with chopped fresh basil before serving, if desired.
Notes
- Use fresh mozzarella for a creamier texture and better melt.
- Feel free to add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a slight kick.
- Gnocchi can be store-bought or homemade depending on preference.
- Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.
