Description

Fried Green Tomatoes are a Southern classic with a crispy golden crust and a tangy, savory center. Perfectly seasoned and fried to perfection, they make a mouthwatering appetizer or side dish.


Ingredients

  • 4 large green tomatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Slice the green tomatoes into 1/2-inch thick slices and discard the ends.
  2. Whisk the eggs and milk together in a medium bowl.
  3. Scoop the flour onto a plate.
  4. Combine the cornmeal, bread crumbs, salt, and pepper on another plate.
  5. Dip each tomato slice in flour to coat.
  6. Then dip the floured tomatoes into the egg and milk mixture.
  7. Dredge the coated tomatoes in the breadcrumb mixture to fully coat.
  8. Heat 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  9. Fry the tomatoes in batches of 4 or 5, making sure they donโ€™t touch.
  10. Once browned on one side, flip and fry the other side.
  11. Drain on paper towels before serving.

Notes

  • Use firm green tomatoes for best results.
  • Donโ€™t overcrowd the pan while frying to ensure even cooking.
  • Drain thoroughly to maintain crispiness.
