Meat Filling:
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 2 small yellow onions, diced
- 1.5 lbs ground beef
- 1 lb ground pork
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp sweet paprika
- Salt & pepper, to taste
Potato Layer:
- 3 lbs potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
- 4 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- Salt & pepper, to taste
Creamy Topping:
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups sour cream
- 1 cup heavy cream
Instructions
Prepare the Meat Filling:
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium heat.
- Add diced onions and red bell pepper and sautรฉ for 5โ7 minutes until softened.
- Add ground beef and pork, breaking it apart as it cooks, until browned and fully cooked (about 15 minutes).
- Stir in garlic powder, sweet paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside.
Prepare the Potato Layer:
- Preheat the oven to 450ยฐF (232ยฐC).
- In a large bowl, toss the potato slices with vegetable oil, oregano, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
Assemble the Moussaka:
- Lightly grease a 9ร13-inch baking dish.
- Layer โ of the potato slices evenly on the bottom.
- Spread half of the meat filling over the potatoes.
- Add another โ of the potatoes, followed by the remaining meat filling.
- Finish with a final layer of potatoes, covering the top evenly.
Bake the Moussaka (Covered):
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the oven.
- Bake for 40 minutes.
Prepare the Creamy Topping:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, sour cream, and heavy cream until smooth.
Final Bake (Uncovered):
- Remove the dish from the oven and discard the foil.
- Pour the creamy topping evenly over the potatoes.
- Return the uncovered dish to the oven and bake for 20 minutes, until the topping is set and golden brown.
Rest & Serve:
- Let the moussaka rest for 15โ20 minutes before slicing and serving.
- Enjoy with a fresh salad or crusty bread for a complete meal!
