Description

Easy French Dip Pinwheels are savory, cheesy rolls filled with caramelized onions and tender roast beef, served with a rich au jus for dipping. Perfect for a party appetizer, game day snack, or casual dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
For the Pinwheels:
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Kosher salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 (8 oz) store-bought crescent dough sheets
  • 16 slices provolone cheese, divided
  • 3/4 lb sliced deli roast beef
For the Au Jus:
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Kosher salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and thyme, season with salt and pepper, and cook until caramelized, about 10–15 minutes. Let cool slightly.
  3. Unroll crescent dough sheets and lay them flat. Layer half of the provolone slices evenly over the dough, followed by half of the caramelized onions and half of the roast beef slices.
  4. Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into 1-inch pinwheels. Repeat with the second dough sheet.
  5. Place pinwheels cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Meanwhile, prepare the au jus: melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes.
  7. Serve the pinwheels warm with the au jus for dipping.

Notes

  • Use freshly sliced roast beef for best flavor.
  • Caramelized onions can be made ahead and stored in the fridge.
  • Pinwheels can be reheated in the oven; serve immediately with au jus for optimal taste.
  • Optional: add horseradish sauce inside the pinwheels for an extra kick.
