Description

Easy Chocolate Flan is a creamy, chocolatey custard dessert with a rich caramel base. Topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, it’s perfect for a decadent yet simple treat.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar (for caramelizing)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz / 397g)
  • 1 can whole milk (use same can as condensed milk)
  • 1 can heavy cream and water (use same can, half water and half cream)
  • 3.5 ounces semisweet chocolate, cut into chunks
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 4 eggs, at room temperature
  • Whipped cream and chocolate shavings, to serve

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Caramelize a flan pan or baking dish by melting sugar over medium heat until golden. Swirl to coat bottom evenly and set aside.
  3. Melt semisweet chocolate with cocoa powder in a saucepan over low heat until smooth. Let cool slightly.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, cream-water mixture, eggs, vanilla, and salt. Stir in melted chocolate until well combined.
  5. Pour custard mixture over caramel in the prepared pan.
  6. Place flan pan in a larger baking dish and add hot water to create a water bath, filling halfway up the sides of the flan pan.
  7. Bake 50-60 minutes until custard is set but slightly jiggly in the center.
  8. Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.
  9. To serve, run a knife around edges, invert onto a plate, and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Notes

  • Use room-temperature eggs to avoid curdling.
  • Ensure caramel is evenly spread for a smooth base.
  • Water bath prevents cracking and ensures smooth texture.
  • Can be made a day ahead; flavors improve after chilling.
