- 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm whole milk, divided
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs, divided
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk for glaze
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, combine 1/4 cup warm milk with active dry yeast and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour, 1/4 cup sugar, softened butter, 1 egg, and salt. Knead until a smooth and elastic dough forms.
- Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
- In a saucepan, whisk together remaining 1 cup milk, remaining 1/4 cup sugar, cornstarch, 1 egg, and vanilla extract. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
- Roll the dough into a rectangle. Spread the custard evenly over the surface and sprinkle with raisins.
- Cut into strips and twist each strip gently before placing on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until golden brown.
- In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons milk until smooth. Drizzle over slightly warm twists.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Allow custard to cool slightly before spreading to prevent it from running.
- Do not overfill to avoid leakage during baking.
- Store in an airtight container for up to two days and reheat gently if desired.
