Description

This Creamy Homemade Green Bean Casserole combines crisp-tender green beans, a rich mushroom sauce, and a golden topping of fried shallots and parmesan for a fresh, flavorful take on the classic comfort dish.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and blanched
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 cups vegetable or chicken stock (low-sodium preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 1 cup fried shallots
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Blanch green beans in salted boiling water for 4 minutes, then transfer to ice water to stop cooking. Drain well.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: In a skillet, melt butter or heat olive oil over medium heat. Add mushrooms and sauté until soft and lightly browned. Stir in onion and garlic powders.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Sprinkle flour over mushrooms, stir for one minute, then slowly whisk in stock until sauce thickens.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Add the green beans to the sauce, stirring to coat evenly. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Finishing Touches: Transfer mixture to the baking dish. Top with fried shallots and parmesan cheese.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Bake for 15–20 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Blanch green beans briefly to keep their bright color and crunch.
  • Use fresh mushrooms for the richest flavor.
  • Broil for 2 minutes at the end for extra crispiness.
