- 5 large eggs
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups 2% or whole milk
- Ground nutmeg for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish. - Prepare the Egg Mixture:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth. - Heat the Milk:
In a small saucepan, gently heat the milk over medium heat until warm (around 180°F), ensuring it doesn’t boil. - Combine Milk and Egg Mixture:
Gradually pour the warmed milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from curdling. Whisk for an extra minute once combined. - Pour and Add Nutmeg:
Pour the custard mixture into the prepared dish. Sprinkle ground nutmeg evenly over the surface. - Create a Water Bath:
Place the custard dish in a larger pan. Pour hot water into the outer pan until it reaches 1 inch up the sides of the custard dish. Avoid splashing water into the custard. - Bake:
Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. The custard should jiggle slightly but not appear liquid. - Cool and Serve:
Remove from the oven and cool for 10–15 minutes. Serve warm or refrigerate until chilled for a refreshing treat. Optional toppings include whipped cream or fresh fruit.
Notes
- Ensure the milk doesn’t boil while heating to prevent altering the custard’s texture.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
