Description

Soft and fluffy Portuguese sweet bread swirled with warm cinnamon and brown sugar, baked to golden perfection with a glossy crust and tender crumb. This comforting homemade loaf is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a cozy afternoon treat.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk, warm
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add granulated sugar, softened butter, eggs, and salt. Mix until combined.
  3. Gradually add flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Roll the dough into a rectangle. In a small bowl, mix ground cinnamon and brown sugar, then sprinkle evenly over the dough.
  7. Roll tightly into a log and shape into a braid or place in a loaf pan.
  8. Let rise again for 30 to 45 minutes until puffy.
  9. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  10. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and cooked through, with an internal temperature of 190 degrees Fahrenheit.
  11. Brush the top lightly with melted butter if desired and allow to cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

  • Use warm milk, not hot, to avoid damaging the yeast.
  • Do not rush the rising process for the softest texture.
  • Measure flour accurately to prevent dense bread.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
