Description

These Chocolate Chip Scones are buttery, flaky, and soft, packed with melty chocolate chips in every bite! Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon treat with coffee or tea. Drizzle them with a light vanilla glaze for extra sweetness!

For the Scones:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, grated and very cold or frozen
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or heavy cream (plus more for brushing)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Optional Icing:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk or water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
  • Using a pastry blender or hands, cut in cold grated butter until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients along with chocolate chips. Stir until the dough holds together.
  • Lightly flour a surface and press dough into an 8-inch circle (about ยพ inch thick). Brush the top with buttermilk.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into 8 wedges. Transfer them onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each scone.
  • Chill the scones in the refrigerator for 20 minutes while preheating the oven to 400ยฐF.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown. Let them cool slightly.
  • Optional: Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make a glaze. Drizzle over warm scones.
  • Serve warm or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Notes

  • Freeze unbaked scones for up to 3 months. Bake straight from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.
  • Swap chocolate chips for nuts or dried fruit for a fun variation!
  • For extra buttery flavor, brush tops with heavy cream before baking.
