Description

Rich layered dessert bars with a buttery shortbread base, a smooth caramel center made from sweetened condensed milk, and a silky chocolate topping finished with crunchy toffee bits.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup toffee bits
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, melted butter, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until a soft dough forms.
  3. Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes, until lightly golden.
  5. In a bowl, stir together sweetened condensed milk, light brown sugar, and salt until smooth.
  6. Pour the mixture evenly over the warm crust.
  7. Return to the oven and bake for 20 minutes, until the caramel layer is gently bubbling.
  8. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel layer. Let sit for 2 to 3 minutes until softened, then spread into a smooth layer.
  9. Sprinkle toffee bits evenly over the melted chocolate.
  10. Allow bars to cool completely before slicing into squares.
