Chocolate Buttermilk Waffles are rich, fluffy waffles with a deep chocolate flavor, perfect for breakfast or brunch. Served with whipped cream, fresh strawberries, and optional chocolate chips, they are a decadent yet easy treat.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 whole eggs, beaten
  • 2 ounces unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips (optional)
  • Vegetable spray, for waffle iron
  • Fresh strawberries, for serving
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat waffle iron and lightly coat with vegetable spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and buttermilk. Mix until smooth.
  4. Gradually fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix. Fold in chocolate chips if using.
  5. Pour batter into the preheated waffle iron and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions until waffles are set and slightly crisp.
  6. In a medium bowl, whip heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  7. Serve waffles warm topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter to keep waffles light and fluffy.
  • Chocolate chips add extra chocolate flavor but are optional.
  • Waffles can be kept warm in a low oven while cooking remaining batter.
  • For extra richness, drizzle with chocolate syrup or maple syrup.
