Ingredients in Chicken Tikka Masala

Hereโ€™s the beauty of this dishโ€”it layers on flavor step by step, with just a few pantry staples and fresh ingredients doing all the heavy lifting. Letโ€™s break it down:

Chicken Thighs or Breasts: Boneless, skinless, and perfect for soaking up all the bold flavors. Thighs stay extra juicy, but breasts work great too if thatโ€™s your preference.

Yogurt: Acts as the base of the marinade, tenderizing the chicken and adding a subtle tang.

Garlic & Ginger: The dynamic duo of flavor in Indian cuisineโ€”fresh is best for maximum aroma and taste.

Garam Masala: The heart of the flavor. This warm, fragrant spice blend gives Chicken Tikka Masala its signature depth.

Tomato Puree: Forms the rich, tangy backbone of the creamy sauce. Go for high-quality puree for best results.

Heavy Cream: Balances the spices with luxurious smoothness. Coconut milk is a great swap if youโ€™re dairy-free.

Cilantro: A fresh, herby finish that brightens everything up.

(Note: the full ingredients list, including measurements, is provided in the recipe card directly below.)

Instructions

Letโ€™s dive into the steps to create this flavorful masterpiece:

Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, combine yogurt, garlic, ginger, and spices. Add the chicken and let it marinate for at least 30 minutesโ€”or overnight if youโ€™re planning ahead. The longer it marinates, the better the flavor.

Cook the Chicken: Sear the marinated chicken in a hot pan or grill it for a smoky flavor. Cook until golden and just cooked through. Set asideโ€”youโ€™ll finish it in the sauce later.

Prepare the Sauce: In the same pan, sautรฉ onions, garlic, and ginger until fragrant. Add tomato puree and simmer until it deepens in color and thickens slightly.

Add Cream & Spices: Stir in cream and more garam masala. Simmer gently to let the flavors meld into a rich, silky sauce.

Combine Chicken with Sauce: Add the cooked chicken back to the pan and simmer for another few minutes. Let it soak up all the saucy goodness.

Serve and Enjoy: Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve warm with rice, naan, or both (no judgment here!).

How to Serve Chicken Tikka Masala

This dish is rich, creamy, and full of bold flavorsโ€”so pair it with simple sides that let it shine:

Fluffy Basmati Rice: The classic pairing. It soaks up every bit of that luscious sauce.

Buttery Naan Bread: Warm, soft naan is ideal for scooping up sauce and chicken in each bite.

Cucumber Raita: A cool, creamy yogurt side that balances the spice.

Pickled Onions or Mango Chutney: Adds a tangy or sweet contrast.

As a Bowl Meal: Serve it over rice with a side of greens or roasted veggies for a complete, colorful plate.

Additional Tips

Prep Ahead: Marinate the chicken the night before for a deeper flavor.

Spice It Up: Like it hot? Add extra chili powder or a dash of cayenne.

Lighten It Up: Use half-and-half instead of cream or swap with coconut milk for a dairy-free option.

Storage Tips: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3โ€“4 days. Reheat gently to preserve the sauceโ€™s creaminess.

Double the Batch: It freezes beautifully, so make extra and freeze portions for a quick, satisfying meal later.
