Description

Chicken Parmesan is a classic Italian-American dish featuring breaded chicken breasts baked with marinara sauce and melted mozzarella, finished with freshly grated Parmesan and fresh basil for a comforting, flavorful meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut in half horizontally to make 6 breast halves
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 cup Italian-style bread crumbs or panko
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 Tablespoons oil
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce (or homemade)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a shallow bowl, beat the eggs. In another bowl, combine panko, Italian bread crumbs, garlic powder, and half of the Parmesan cheese.
  3. Dip each chicken breast half into the eggs, then coat evenly with the breadcrumb mixture.
  4. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken until golden brown on both sides, about 3–4 minutes per side. Remove from skillet.
  5. Place chicken in a baking dish. Spoon marinara sauce over each piece and sprinkle with mozzarella and remaining Parmesan cheese.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, until chicken is cooked through and cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, broil the chicken for 1–2 minutes at the end of baking.
  • Serve with pasta, rice, or a side salad.
  • Use homemade marinara for richer flavor.
  • Chicken can be pounded slightly thinner for more even cooking.
