Description

A classic Cheese and Onion Sandwich that is comforting, quick to prepare, and deliciously satisfying, perfect for a quick lunch or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 2 slices of your favorite bread (soft white, whole grain, or crusty baguette)

Cheese

  • 2 slices of mild cheese (cheddar or gouda)

Onions

  • 1 large sweet onion (like Vidalia)

Butter

  • 1 tablespoon for cooking and a smear for the bread

Seasoning

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: Start by slicing your onions thinly. In a skillet, melt a tablespoon of butter over medium heat and add the onions. Cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown—this should take about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: While the onions are cooking, take two slices of bread and spread butter on one side of each slice. Place one slice, butter-side down, on a clean surface. Layer with cheese, followed by the cooked onions, and top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.
  3. Toast the Sandwich: In the same skillet used for the onions, place the assembled sandwich over medium-low heat. Toast it for about 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. You can press down slightly with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
  4. Slice and Serve: Once toasted to perfection, remove the sandwich from the skillet. Let it cool for a minute, then slice it in half diagonally. This adds a touch of elegance and makes it easier to handle!

Notes

  • Caramelize Slowly: Take your time when cooking the onions; slow caramelization brings out their natural sweetness.
  • Use Quality Cheese: The better the cheese, the more flavorful your Cheese and Onion Sandwich will be.
  • Experiment with Bread: Don’t be afraid to try different types of bread for unique textures and flavors.
  • Add a Touch of Garlic: A little minced garlic added to the onions during cooking can elevate the taste.
  • Keep It Warm: If you are making several sandwiches, keep them warm in a low oven while you finish the rest.
