Description

The Best Chopped Cheese Sandwich is a classic New York deli favorite. Juicy chopped hamburger patties combined with sautéed onions and peppers, topped with melty American cheese, all served on a toasted hoagie roll.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pre-formed hamburger patties
  • 1 teaspoon celtic sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh cracked pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Green bell pepper, sliced
  • White onion, sliced
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4-6 slices American cheese

Instructions

  1. Season the hamburger patties with salt, pepper, and garlic powder on both sides.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties until browned and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  3. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, sauté the sliced green bell pepper and onion until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Chop the cooked hamburger patties into small pieces and return them to the skillet with the sautéed vegetables. Mix together until combined and heated through.
  5. Place slices of American cheese over the meat and vegetable mixture and let melt.
  6. Meanwhile, butter the hoagie rolls and toast them in a separate pan or under a broiler until golden and crisp.
  7. Spoon the cheesy chopped meat and vegetables into the toasted hoagie rolls and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Feel free to add toppings like lettuce, tomato, pickles, or hot sauce.
  • Using pre-formed patties speeds up the cooking process, but freshly formed patties work just as well.
  • For extra flavor, cook the vegetables in the juices from the meat.
