Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Dough:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

For the Garlic Butter:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 12 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

Instructions

  • Bloom Yeast: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  • Prepare Dough: In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, yogurt, olive oil, and minced garlic. Stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead Dough: Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled.
  • Divide Dough: Punch down the dough and divide into 4-6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
  • Second Rise: Let dough balls rest on a floured surface under a damp cloth for 15-20 minutes.
  • Prepare Garlic Butter: Mix melted butter, minced garlic, and cilantro (if using) in a small bowl.
  • Roll and Cook Naan: Roll each ball into a 6-7 inch oval. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook each naan for 1-2 minutes per side until golden and puffed.
  • Brush with Garlic Butter: Brush hot naan with garlic butter immediately after cooking.

Notes

  • For added flavor, mix a pinch of dried oregano or cumin into the dough.
  • Use an oven at 450°F (230°C) as an alternative cooking method.
  • Best served warm alongside curries, dals, or stews.
