Description

A moist and tender Apple Upside Down Cake topped with caramelized apple slices and warm cinnamon flavor. This classic dessert flips into a beautiful glossy fruit layer over a soft, buttery crumb that is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (for batter)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for batter)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease a 9 inch round cake pan.
  2. Pour 2 tablespoons melted butter into the bottom of the pan and sprinkle 1/4 cup granulated sugar evenly over it.
  3. Arrange the sliced apples in a circular pattern over the sugar layer.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix 1/2 cup melted butter and 3/4 cup granulated sugar. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
  6. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined.
  7. Pour the batter evenly over the arranged apples and smooth the top gently.
  8. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges.
  10. Place a serving plate over the pan and carefully flip the cake onto the plate. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use firm apples such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for best texture.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the crumb tender.
  • Let the cake rest before flipping to prevent sticking.
  • Store covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
