Description

These Air Fryer Onion Bhajis are crispy, flavorful Indian snacks made with onions, gram flour, and aromatic spices. Air-fried to perfection, they are a healthier alternative to traditional deep-fried bhajis.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 white onions, slightly larger than tennis balls
  • 1 red onion, slightly larger than a tennis ball
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1 x 2.5 cm (1 inch) ginger, julienned
  • 3 green chillies, pounded to a paste
  • 1 tablespoon panch poran*
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder (optional)
  • 2 tbsp rapeseed (canola) oil
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 4 tbsp rice flour
  • 140g sifted gram flour
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped coriander leaves

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the onions and place them in a large bowl. Add salt, garlic paste, ginger, and green chilli paste, mixing well.
  2. Stir in panch poran, Kashmiri chilli powder (if using), rapeseed oil, turmeric, rice flour, and gram flour. Mix until all ingredients are well combined and the mixture holds together.
  3. Fold in the chopped coriander leaves.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 180°C (350°F) for 3–5 minutes.
  5. Form small portions of the onion mixture into loose fritters and carefully place them in the air fryer basket, ensuring they don’t touch.
  6. Air fry for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove from the air fryer and serve immediately with chutney or yogurt dip.

Notes

  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary.
  • Adjust the number of chillies to control the spiciness.
  • Panch poran is a Bengali five-spice blend; it can be substituted with cumin, fennel, mustard, fenugreek, and nigella seeds.
